I recently joined a FB-group on recommendation. Thought it was just paddling freaks and it sounded like fun. The amount of biased thoughts were staggering!

Old, fat (mostly) men spreading their delusions about kayaking safety. What drives those people, one might ask? The Intermediate Syndrome, where you think you know but know very little, or just plain ol' ignorance and no capability to wake up and smell your own shit?

The amount of BS I smell is copious. Here are but a few examples from that group's posts and comments:

-"If I capsize, I know that I could easily climb back up without any tools, provided I take off my life jacket. I practice this every summer in my racing canoe."

-"I have never fallen into the water and do not even bring a floating device any more."

-"Practicing rolling is fun at most but not a real rescue technique."

-"I do not practice rolling because I have a bad shoulder and rolling takes so much strength."

-"The best way to avoid capsizing in a sea kayak is to develop sufficiently good balance. For example, by practicing paddling in difficult conditions using more unstable canoes."

I will stalk this group a few more days and maybe get some more important "survival tips".

This post is a guest post and will (maybe) be continued.
